This volume contains an alphabetical trade directory of London, alongside an account of its history. But it covers far more than just the capital, comprising similar histories and trade directories for over 250 towns and cities throughout England and Wales. These even include comparatively small settlements, such as Frodsham and Monmouth.

The London directory details a substantial number of traders and professionals. Some establishments, for instance Custom House and the General Post Office, have lengthy listings of senior staff. But the provincial entries are also interesting, and chart developing industries like coal mining in Lancashire.
