Army & Civil Service List 1862

Until the Indian Mutiny of 1857, India was ruled by the East India Company, but the British Crown assumed direct responsibility following an Act of Parliament in 1858. This list for January 1862 therefore provides us with a view of the elaborate bureaucracy that was created for the governance of India, recording names and occupations, and giving the family historian the opportunity to find out who worked where, and what they did.

Each Presidency - Bengal, Bombay and Madras - had its own establishment, including the civil service, the military, the ecclesiastical and the medical, each with its own hierarchy, with dates of appointment and promotion. In Bombay, DH Cotes, who had been Assistant Chaplain at Kurrachee from 1849, is noted as being on furlough, while Bengal is recorded as having 11 Generals, 27 Lieutenant-Generals, and over 70 Major-Generals. The directory also has full details of the elaborate conditions of service, ntry requirements, and pay, and the original index of names.
