Commonwealth Probates
Volume 1: 1650-1651

The Commonwealth period, when the monarchy ceased to rule following the English Civil War, was a time when many of the traditional laws and customs were abandoned. For the family historian it means that the usual rules for the location of records and the way they were kept may no longer apply. This index to wills proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury was originally published in book form in 1909.

Bookmarked and fully searchable, this CD covers two years and provides only brief details, but these are probably enough to identify the people concerned. For example, the will Thomas Leake of Leake, Notts, who died in the High Bench Prison, Southwark, was proved by his cousin and next-of-kin William Leake of the Minories, London, citizen and merchant tailor.

The arrangement is alphabetical for each year, with indexes to stray names and places.
