Dictionary of Biography

The set of three CDs of The Imperial Dictionary of Universal Biography comprises the enhanced images of the pages of this 16 volume book published in about 1870 by William Mackenzie and edited by John Francis Walker. It is a series of ‘original memoirs of distinguished men of all ages and all nations by writers of eminence in the various branches of Literature, Science and Art’. There are thousands of entries and many portraits, mainly of men from the 17th to 19th centuries on a total of over 2,600 pages listed and indexed alphabetically. I found John Buckeridge, an eminent cleric born in Marlborough, Wiltshire, who held benefices of Essex parishes and was appointed Bishop of Rochester in 1611.

The dictionary is a valuable reference work, available at £24.95 plus £2.50 p&p per order from S&N Genealogy Supplies, West Wing, Manor Farm, Chilmark, Salisbury SP3 5AF
