Marlborough College Register 1843-1904

Marlborough College was founded in 1843 as a boarding school primarily for the sons of the clergy. This fifth edition of its register contains information about all those who attended the school up to 1904, as well as all masters and other college staff recipients of awards, and details of other important sports matches. It even includes the winners of the 'Bull' cap for drop kicking and the 'Bright' belt for place kicking.

The most valuable section to family historians will be the lists of former pupils, which include details of their careers, often in the military or Navy, or in the Church, law, business or academia. Many, such as Charles Dowding, died young. He was the son of Rev B C Dowding of Southbroom, near Devizes, and left Marlborough College at Christmas 1864. He became a naval chaplain, and was lost overboard from HMS Agincourt, 80 miles west of Cape St Vincent in 1879.
