London, Bishopsgate St. Botolph Parish Records 1558-1753

Early parish records are difficult to use in the original, and this transcription by A W Cornelius Hallen, originally published in three volumes from 1889 onwards, will be invaluable to anyone with ancestry in the City of London. The original volumes have over 2,100 pages, and the name indexes alone take up a high proportion of these, but there is a lot of information here that is readily accesible. Not all the people recorded are local. Abraham Trice of St. Mary, Somerset, dyer, married Anne Foster, widow, in 1617, and in the same year Lazarus Blancher, Dutchman, married Francis Dickenson.

There are many French and Dutch surnames, and unusual first names abound. Ottywell Potter was baptised and buried in 1603, while Creature Lawrence married Robert Plowman in 1617. Most of the burials listed show the deceased's age, and some baptisms show the occupation of the father. There are also the usual baptisms of foundlings and children 'born in the street'.
