London 1861 Census Index - London City Companies - First World War Deaths

Briefly described below are three of the recently released CDs from S&N Genealogy Supplies. The enhanced facsimile images of the pages of books are searchable by name or part name.

The London 1861 Census Index

With version 5, this index is now complete with an impressive 1,461,000 entries. It is searchable by surname, forename and age (up to plus or minus five years) and wildcard characters may be used to find variants. It is

cross-referenced to the class and piece numbers and either the folio numbers or the page number of the S&N census return set of CDs, which are viewed in Acrobat Reader. The index, for PCs running only under Windows 98 or later, is simply installed by clicking on the relevant removable disc drive in ‘My Computer’ then following the onscreen instructions. The search results may be printed out and there is a facility to list all members of a family from a single entry. The index is an invaluable aid for finding people in mid-19 th century London. The City Companies of London - and Their Good Works

This CD comprises the searchable and printable enhanced images of an illustrated book of 414 pages written by P H Ditchfield and published by J M Dent in 1904. The main menu comprises contents, illustrations (over 60), preface, introduction, part 1 (62 minor companies), and index. Every company from apothecaries to woolmen is bookmarked and you will find a history, a description of the central hall and the treasures, income and expenditure and its charitable activities. First World War Deaths - Army [other ranks], Army Officer and Navy War Deaths

This set of three CDs is one in the ‘Overseas Births Marriages and Deaths’ series, which currently includes Second World War, Army, Navy, RAF, and Indian Services Staff Deaths. For those unfamiliar with these indexes the information gives the name, rank, number, unit or ship, year of death and the reference required to order a death certificate. The contents

comprise the enhanced images from microfiche of the original index volumes held by the registrar general. Disc 1 comprises the Army (other ranks) with surnames A-H; disc 2 includes Army (other ranks), surnames I-S; while disc 3 contains Army (other ranks), surnames T-Z, Naval- both officers and ratings and Army officers. The Army officers listing includes members of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Air Force. The pages of the alphabetical listings are extensively bookmarked and this index is a useful aid for the First World War; costing £29.95.
