Mr Punch's First World War

This CD, Mr Punch's History of the Great War, is a reissue of contemporary monthly articles about the First World War which appeared in the periodical Punch. Although accompanied by cartoons, some of them humourous and some inspirational, it is basically a commentary on the progrss of the war, and gives an indication of the changing moods and attitudes as news of the various successes and disasters came in.

As the articles were written throughout the war, there is no benefit of hindsight, and this gives and interesting perspective on events and their significance. The style of the period will be familiar to anyone who has seen old issues of Punch - rather laboured and long-winded, well-suited to the gentleman's club and the assumptions of a prosperous and educated middle class.

The CD will be of interest to any student of the war but it's value to the family historian is limited, since it contains very little information about individuals and their wartime experiences.
