Medicine Men

This Medical Directory contains over 1,900 pages and is a little daunting at first to find one's way around: browsing the whole is not practical. Luckily, as well as being bookmarked, the text is searchable and the contents list near the beginning of the directory is also helpful.

The directory, covering every aspect of medicine including dentistry, contains a variety of lists, from physicians in the Royal Household to hospitals, medical schools and other establishments. However, it is the biographical details of doctors which will be of most interest to family historians. I found that W G Grace, better known as a cricketer, had two consulting rooms in the Bristol area, and was also a medical officer for the Barton Regis Union. I also checked the details of the doctors mentioned on my own family certificates as having certified death.

As always, the advertisements also make interesting reading, with artificial legs by H J Stump, asses' milk for delicate children and invalids, and homes for the treatment of inebriate gentlefolk.
