1861 Census for Ludlow, Shropshire (RG9/1834-1839)

Stokesay Castle is situated close to the Welsh border and is said to be the oldest building of its kind in England.

Technically Stokesay Castle is more of a fortified manor house than a castle and the original structures were extensively modified by Lawrence de Ludlow.

The castle passed over to several different families including the Cravens and then the Allcrofts but during the mid-1800s the premises were rented out.

We can see in the 1861 Census (RG9/1839, page 91) the castle was inhabited by Enoch Morris and his family. He is noted as being a farmer of 570 acres and employing four agricultural labourers (right).
