Boer War Magazine

The Second Boer War lasted from 1899 to 1902, and was fought between the British Empire and the two independant Boer republics in South Africa. This CD, Under the Union Jack 1899-1900, comprises facsimiles of a copiously illustrated 24-page weekly periodical, produced to cover the war. Although the reproduction is of good quality, the original photos are not.

Each issue has a description of the previous week's events, with photos of the units and personalities involved. The tone is kingoistic, with the bravey, character and fitness of the Empire troops continually compared with the poor condition and base tactics of the Boers.

For the family historian, the disappointment will be that none of the ordinary soldiers or sailors is names. Its value will be for those looking for a history of the was through contemporary eyes, and an insight into the attitudes of the day.
