The Royal Calendar 1879

How dull is the world of Google and online information compared to the 19th Century publications like The Royal Calendar. This 1879 edition is stuffed full of facts like the cost of licences for keeping a dog, for painting your coat of arms on your carriage, or marking playing cards. It will tell you the name of the Queen's ornithologist, and all her other tradesmen, as well as how to reclaim the money for damaged postage stamps. It is best, however, for information on the establishment, especially the peerage, the legal system, Parliament, the academic world, the Army and Navy and the Civil Service.

For the family historian with an interest in the aristocracy, there is much on the holders of titles, and how and when the titles were created. At over 900 pages, this is not an easy CD to use, and the information is much less accessible than it would be in book form, but familiarity will bring its rewards.
