On CD

London in 1881

The London 1881 Census set of 41 CDs contains images of the original census sheets, not transcripts, of the London area. Each CD has its own area and alphabetical street index.

A street name can also be found by consulting the master area indexes, showing areas, sub-districts and street indexes. These direct you to the relevant CD number. Next to the name of the street are the piece and folio numbers. For instance, Tent Street, Bethnal Green, was referenced to RG11/425 folio 9-14. For example, insert the CD for Bethnal Green RG11/425. The pieces are bookmarked in groups of 10 folios. Select a bookmark to navigate near to the folio you need. I selected the bookmark for folio 10 and scrolled back to folio 9 to locate Tent Street.

You may zoom in and out, rotate the page, save or print it. Details include names of the head of household, other members of the household, relationship to head of household, address, occupation, age and whether the person has an infirmity.

The image quality is good, although there are some pages that appear to be greyish. The tools to zoom and magnify are useful to read the handwriting.

As yet there is no name index. This means that unless you know an address it will involve some searching through the streets. This can be a good thing though, as I have previously found other ancestors living near to known addresses of interest. However, you could always use the 1881 Census index for England and Wales, freely available online at www.familysearch.org, and then use the piece and folio reference to consult the image on the CD set.
