After consultation with users, S&N/ British Data Archive are introducing a completely new pricing structure to their BMD index and The Genealogist web services giving access to a wide variety of material with a single subscription instead of just a single database. The Genealogist website contains a rapidly growing collection of indexes and databases, including complete census indexes, some linked to page images. Their now complete BMD index service offers access to all the GRO civil registration indexes from 1837-2003 and includes some innovative additional features.
The new subscription services are being offered in addition to the individual subscriptions already available and provide access to all of their Census and BMD Indexes, parish records and land records. There is a choice of a quarterly or annual subscriptions and a choice of Monthly, Quarterly or Annual payments, allowing you to spread the cost.
These subscriptions offer very good value, could save you hundreds of pounds over buying the individual subscriptions and start from as little as £4.67 a month.

There are several subscription levels to cater for your level of usage:
- Annual subscription (with usage credit limit, minimum term one year): Monthly payment £5 (including 50 credits per month). Quarterly subscription £14 (including 175 credits per quarter). Annual payment £56 (including 800 credits per year)
- Quarterly subscription (with usage credit limit, minimum one quarter): Quarterly payment £25 (including 175 credits per quarter)
- Personal Annual subscription £69 (no credit limit, minimum sign-up one year)
- Professional Annual subscription (no credit limit, minimum term one year): £149
The subscriptions are all subject to their standard terms and conditions which prohibit the use of your subscription to provide lookups for others. Only the professional subscription allows commercial use of the service. (Conditions apply).
There is a comprehensive census indexing program in place with new material regularly becoming available. Initially they are concentrating on the London area which should have completed indexes for the 1841, 51, 61, 71 and 91 census by the time you read this. Most users seem to want indexes rather than images, so this is where the company’s priorities presently lie, however images will soon be available from London 1861, 71 and 91 with other years to follow. Full transcripts of these census years will also become available as the indexing is completed. However, the census isn’t the only material being added to the online service, a fully searchable version of the 1873 Returns of Owners of Land is imminent and various Parish Records will follow.
