 William George Armstrong, who was born in 1810 in Newcastle Upon Tyne, focused his engineering mind on developing hydro-electric machinery. Later he developed dockside cranes, military guns, a hydraulic swing bridge, ship production (including battleships), and lifting gear for the Tower Bridge, London.
In the 1871 Census we can see William George Armstrong living at Jesmond Dene Hall, with his wife Margaret and a servant. His occupation is notes as being 'Knight Companion of the Bath. Chief Engineer, partner in a firm of manufacturing engineers.' (RG10/5108, F21b, p42). |
