Staffordshire 1861 Census

A faithful reproduction of the enumerator's books

The 1861 Staffordshire Census from British Data Archive spreads over 13 CDs of scanned images of the original enumerators' books.

Handily, they're in PDF files with bookmarks to help you find the right section. (See right.)

Each CD has an index of areas (and streets for areas of high population). These indexes can be searched easily enough, but you do first need to know which CD has which Registration Districts (it's printed on the disc) on it.

Among the registration Districts covered are: Burton-upon-Trent, Cheadle, Dudley, Leek, Lichfield, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Penkridge, Stafford, Stoke-upon-Trent, Stone, Tamworth, Uttoxeter, Walsall, West Bromwich, Wolstanton, and Wolverhampton.

Disc 13 also has a Master Index of all the areas and streets on all of the CDs. It also has name index files, but don't get too excited - these are blank forms for you to fill in yourself. British Data Archive is working on proper name indexes for its image files, but there doesn't seem to be one available for this set just yet.

Census information provided invludes: name, age, parish and county of birth, relationship to head of household, sex, occupation, disabilities, and employment.
