Over the past ten years, RootsMagic has proved to be a leading light in the genealogy software market, and this latest version continues the trend. I found it incredibly easy to install and was swiftly inputting my family tree details. Intuitive and simple to use, I can see why it is so popular.
I loved the gazetteer and mapping facilities, which had me zooming round the web collecting local data for my Gloucestershire ancestors, and I had fun trying the different chart views, adding notes, sources and to-do lists and even playing with publishing my research as a book or website.
You can customise your charts and create shareable CDs of your research; or 'go portable' with a USB stick. Version 5 'newbies' include media tags, timelines, county checker, and research manager, all very useful. You also get six CDs of historical records and a three-months subscription to TheGenealogist.co.uk.
